FDA and Western Growers Launch Data-Sharing Pact to Boost Produce Safety

New Food Safety Standards for Fresh Produce

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Western Growers have taken a significant step forward in enhancing food safety standards for fresh produce by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

This agreement aims to improve proactive, science-based food safety measures with a strong focus on the prevention of outbreaks and the protection of public health.

Western Growers, representing fresh produce growers in Arizona, California, Colorado, and New Mexico, states that this memorandum establishes a data-sharing pilot project centered on fresh produce food safety data.

The initiative will utilize Western Growers’ proprietary GreenLink food safety data-sharing platform, creating a foundation for ongoing collaboration between the organization and the FDA.

Kyle Diamantis, the deputy commissioner for human foods at the FDA, highlights the importance of this partnership in enhancing data sharing between the agency and the fresh produce industry.

“With these data, the FDA can identify the factors that might contribute to contamination, such as land use surrounding the farm, the age and condition of equipment, and how produce is transported,” he explains.

This information is critical for focusing collaborative efforts with growers on practices that are most effective in reducing risk.

Diamantis emphasizes that these collaborations are not merely about data sharing or conducting a root cause analysis but are the beginning of a long-term relationship with the industry, built on trust and geared towards the prevention of outbreaks.

The program aims to create a sustainable model that protects public health by advancing food safety knowledge, fostering preventive food safety behaviors, and supporting resource management for public health agencies.

Western Growers asserts that this partnership marks a significant step forward in promoting preventive measures and strengthening public-private collaboration.

Sonia Salas, associate vice president of food safety and regulatory affairs at Western Growers, notes that the collaboration aligns with the FDA’s goals in the Reagan-Udall Foundation’s Roadmap to Produce Safety.

This roadmap advocates for a shared responsibility approach to food safety, emphasizing structured, stakeholder-led collaborations.

The ultimate goal is to foster a better understanding of safe practices in the growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of fresh produce, minimizing supply chain disruptions.
