Village Farms Fresh Honored as ‘Giga Guru’ in Walmart’s Project Gigaton

This prestigious acknowledgment comes as their efforts, along with those of other suppliers, are projected to collectively reduce, avoid, or sequester over one gigaton of CO2 emissions, achieving Walmart’s goal six years ahead of schedule.

This environmental impact is equivalent to removing 238 million cars from the road for a year.

Launched in 2017, Project Gigaton aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Walmart’s global value chain significantly.

It encourages suppliers to set and achieve SMART goals in various sustainability pillars, report their progress, and calculate their carbon footprint.

Walmart’s Project Gigaton™ seeks to engage suppliers and other stakeholders to collectively reduce or avoid one gigaton of greenhouse gases by 2030.

Village Farms Fresh has been an active participant since the initiative’s inception, consistently tracking and reporting their sustainability measures under the guidance of Brandon Jamison, Director of Quality Assurance.

Jamison emphasized the company’s longstanding commitment to environmental consciousness and the role of Project Gigaton in maintaining their sustainability efforts.

He also highlighted the potential for implementing a company-wide tracking system to monitor sustainability data continuously.

With an eye toward the future, Village Farms Fresh is eager to reach new sustainability milestones and encourages more companies to join the initiative, amplifying the collective positive impact.

The company’s involvement in Project Gigaton aligns with its broader ‘Good for the Earth’ initiative.

Helen L. Aquino, Director of Brand Marketing & Communication, shared insights into the company’s approach to sustainability at a Project Gigaton event, emphasizing the gradual buildup of their sustainability goals over the years through the THESIS Index, a sustainability performance measurement tool by The Sustainability Consortium.
