Organic Produce Sales Surge Driven by Young Consumers

The demand for organic fresh produce in the United States is experiencing a notable surge, driven predominantly by young consumers.

According to the Organic Produce Network, organic sales rose nearly six percent to reach a substantial $10.6 billion in 2025.

This growth rate significantly outpaces the expansion of conventional produce sales, which increased by only a modest 0.9 percent over the same period.

Millennials and Gen Z shoppers are at the forefront of this trend, showing a marked preference for organic products and expressing trust in the USDA Organic seal for quality and safety.

The rise in organic produce sales is particularly pronounced in the Southern United States, where purchases grew by an impressive eight percent year over year.

Key Takeaways:
  • Organic produce sales increased 6% to $10.6 billion in 2025.
  • Millennials and Gen Z drive demand for organic fresh produce.
  • Southern U.S. sees 8% growth in organic produce purchases.
  • Berries remain the top-selling organic product, reaching $2.4 billion.
  • Organic options are prioritized by young consumers despite higher prices.

In terms of volume, the Northeast led the way with an 8.3 percent increase, followed closely by the South and the Midwest.

Among the top-selling organic products, berries continue to dominate, maintaining their position as the leading organic purchase for the fourth consecutive year.

Berry sales reached nearly $2.4 billion in 2025, marking a significant 12 percent increase from 2024.

Despite their higher price point, organic berries remain a high-value category, with sales and volume growing nationwide.

Organic bananas are another standout in the fresh produce sector, achieving a remarkable 15.3 percent increase in sales to $587 million in 2025.

The volume of bananas sold climbed 9.7 percent year over year, further solidifying their status as the top-seller by volume.

These sales gains are attributed to the affordability and utility of organic bananas, which continue to attract price-conscious shoppers.

Similarly, organic citrus sales saw a significant boost, growing by 17.8 percent and reaching $363 million in 2025.

Despite prices being over 50 percent higher than conventional options, organic citrus sales increased, underscoring the strong consumer demand for organic produce.

While organic sales are booming, certain categories such as packaged salads have experienced a decline.

Sales of organic packaged salads fell 3.2 percent year over year, reflecting shifts in consumer spending patterns amid inflation.

The category maintained a 68.8 percent price premium over conventional salads, which may have contributed to the decline in sales and volume.

Despite these challenges, the overall trajectory for organic produce remains positive, driven by the preferences of young consumers who continue to prioritize organic options in their shopping habits.
