The International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) has announced a significant enhancement to its food safety expertise by appointing Christina Ferreira, Ph.D., as Vice President of Food Safety & Quality, effective June 15, 2026.
With over 13 years of applied research and regulatory experience at the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. Ferreira is expected to bring a lot of information and insight to the role.
Her appointment underscores IFPA’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards in produce safety and quality across the supply chain.
Dr. Ferreira’s background in microbial hazards and produce safety will be instrumental in guiding IFPA members through the complexities of food safety regulations.

Her work at the FDA’s Human Foods Program, particularly her research on the persistence and dissemination of foodborne pathogens, positions her as a valuable asset in developing science-based best practices.
According to Dr. Max Teplitski, IFPA’s Chief Science Officer, Dr. Ferreira’s ability to translate complex scientific findings into practical guidance is a key factor in maintaining consumer confidence in the fresh produce industry.

In her new role, Dr. Ferreira will focus on providing technical guidance to IFPA members, supporting industry-wide efforts in root cause analysis, and collaborating closely with the food safety advocacy team.
Her responsibilities will include leading the development of resources that offer specialized support in both technical science and regulatory affairs.
Dr. Ferreira’s proximity to the Washington, D.C.
metropolitan area will facilitate regular engagement with federal agencies and industry stakeholders, enhancing the IFPA’s influence and effectiveness in addressing food safety challenges.
Joining Dr. Ferreira on the IFPA’s Science and Technology team is industry veteran Erik Larsen, who will serve as the Director of Supply Chain.
Larsen will oversee the “Supply Chain of the Future” initiative and work on projects such as FSMA204 and lot level traceability.
Together, they aim to strengthen the IFPA’s role in connecting the industry with innovative solutions and expert guidance.
The addition of these seasoned professionals highlights the IFPA’s dedication to fostering a vibrant future for the fresh produce supply chain by enhancing safety, quality, and consumer trust.
