Spring Produce Promotions Surge with Strawberries and Grapes

The arrival of spring has ushered in a surge of produce promotions, with strawberries and grapes leading the charge among consumer favorites.

As the first day of spring marked the beginning of warmer weather, retailers have strategically highlighted these fruits alongside other seasonal staples.

This week, strawberries and red seedless grapes captured the spotlight, surpassing even traditionally popular items like watermelons in consumer interest.

Retailers have also been gearing up for the upcoming grilling season by featuring an array of vegetables such as yellow squash, zucchini, eggplants, bell peppers, and sweet onions.

These selections align with the seasonal demand for fresh produce as consumers prepare for outdoor cooking and gatherings.

Key Takeaways:
  • Spring leads to a rise in produce promotions, especially strawberries and grapes.
  • Retailers are preparing for grilling season by promoting various vegetables.
  • Cinco de Mayo increases demand for specific produce like tomatoes and avocados.
  • Total produce ads rose 4% this week, but decreased 11% from last year.
  • Price trends: strawberries down 18%, grapes up 10%; onions rose 22% per pound.

Moreover, the anticipation of Cinco de Mayo celebrations has led to increased promotions of Roma tomatoes, white onions, jalapenos, cilantro, avocados, and jicama.

In terms of advertising numbers, the week saw a total of 256,370 ads, marking a 4% increase from the previous week.

However, this is an 11% decrease compared to the same week last year, which had a higher total of 286,884 ads.

Fruits accounted for a significant 54% of the ads, highlighting their popularity among consumers during this period.

Organic produce also played a notable role, representing 14% of the total ads with 35,568 mentions.

Price trends have shown significant fluctuations, with strawberries experiencing an 18% decrease in cost compared to last year, making them more attractive to consumers.

Conversely, red seedless grapes have seen a 10% price increase, yet their popularity remains strong.

Among vegetables, there were no notable price changes, though sweet yellow onions did see a 22% increase per pound.

As the season progresses, retailers are likely to continue capitalizing on these trends, particularly with Mother’s Day promotions expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
